Alcoholism and drug addiction are serious, life-threatening illnesses that manifest in debilitating and far-reaching ways. Addiction affects not only those afflicted but has a ripple effect throughout society. Social and family dysfunction, physical and mental illnesses, loss of freedom through incarceration, and, indeed, death, are but a few of the possible effects of long-term substance abuse. In 2006, 37 percent of all fatalities in the state of Maine were alcohol related.* Substance abuse treatment has saved the lives of thousands of addicts and alcoholics and has improved families' abilities to cope with the illness.
